Tea Growing in Taiwan
Taiwan, also called Formosa, is lucky to have great environment for tea planting. And with the developing of tea technology, and continuous strenuous work and tea growing experiments, this country has been producing all kinds of superior quality teas, known as “Formosa Tea”, and “Taiwan Tea”. The best known ones include Dong-ding and Pou-chong Oolong tea. They have not only become a style of art enjoyed by Taiwanese people but also gained a lot of popularity by people all over the world.
Taiwan has the best camellia sinensis for growing tea. As an important beverage crop, tea has been planting in Taiwan for over two hundred years. The first tea cultivation in Taiwan was introduced by an immigrant family from a southern province of China, Fu-jian, between 1796 and 1820. And the first tea trade started shortly after in 1865. Then the production of tea grew rapidly. At one time tea was one of Taiwan's three major exports.
Taiwan tea was firstly imported to New York by the owner John Dodd of Dodd & Co. in 1869, he named it “Formosa Tea” and soon many people latch on to the craze of drinking Taiwan tea in the western world. Today, approximately 2.5 million tons of tea is grown locally, Some are made non- or semi-fermented teas. Oolong tea is the most popular among those.
